As part of the Grand Space Opera artstation challenge, I created this envionment based on Florent Boston's concept art: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/9mXxoo

The narrative behind the piece is this: An alien king had discovered a mysterious source of energy in an underground cavern and, in order to both demonstrate his power and jealously guard his source of wealth, built a grand throne room at the cavern's entrance. However, extracting the energy released poisonous fumes into the air. The palace has been deserted ever since.

In creating the environment I wanted to create a feeling of awe and menace as well as give a sense of its abandonment. I was keen to use this as an opportunity to practice creating a large modular environment using game production techniques such as trim sheets, vertex painting, and decals.
